9th Class English Stanza Explanation of Poem Daffodils by William Wordsworth.
Stanza No. 1
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze
Explanation:
In this stanza, the poet has compared himself to a solitary cloud. Just like a shadow floats over hills and vale, the poet too has been walking across the country without any end. Suddenly, while walking beside a lake, he saw a large number of golden daffodils that were‘ fluttering and dancing in the breath. They were spread out in long rows along the border of the lake and looked truly happy. The flowing breath made the daffodils flutter and it sounded as if they were dancing.
Stanzas Explanation of poem Daffodils
Stanza No. 2
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
Explanation:
In this verse, flowers are compared
to stars. Like the stars, the daffodils
shimmered as if they were golden in color and sparkled as they fluttered in the
wind. The poet says that the daffodils extended in an endless (continuum)
and were visible as far as he could see
along the shore of a bay. It goes on to say that the daffodils shook their
heads as if dancing with happiness.
Stanza No. 3
The waves beside them danced; but
they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
Explanation:
The poet says that there were swells
that were dancing in the lake but were no match for the billows of daffodils
splashing in the breath. The joyous dance of daffodils was a way better than
theirs. The delighted company of daffodils was the ultimate source of pleasure
for the minstrel and he can feel nothing but happiness in that company.
Although, he kept on looking at the daffodils but he couldn't completely
appreciate the decor before him because it was in cornucopia and he could take
down just a little bit of it.
Stanza No. 4
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure
fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Explanation:
In the last stanza, the poet says
that whenever he lies down on his bed feeling discouraged or sad, the sight of
daffodils flashes in his mind and becomes a source of joy in his loneliness.
The memory of the daffodils takes away all his sorrow and boredom, makes him
happy and it seems to him that his heart is dancing with the daffodils.
